Caricatures have been a
way of defining people’s facial (and personality) characteristics
– in a humorous way – since the Renaissance, if not before.
Joel’s style is less cartoon-y, however, and a touch more
realistic. This is one way he distinguishes himself from the many
caricaturists you might find at conventions, fairs, amusement
parks, corporate events and private parties.
The
medium he tends to use is not the customary magic marker, but pen
and ink, colored pencils and even a good old-fashioned china
marker/grease pencil. This gives the art added value in the way of
texture, dimension and shading.
